There’s been a lot of talk recently about the best way to use LinkedIn tags – what are they, how do they work and why you would want to us them?
What are LinkedIn Tags?
LinkedIn tags work with your contacts and they can help you to:
- Filter your connections so you can review only the people with a particular tag
- Add notes about how you know the person to aid your memory
- Message targeted groups of people with certain tags
What are some ways to use LinkedIn tags?
In the spirit of sharing, John Bellamy from John Bellamy Consulting has provided us with 3 brief tips about how he uses LinkedIn tags and how you can too. We suggest you also take a few minutes to watch the video below which explains some of the context around John’s tips (below).
If you’re a bricks and mortar business, or you have a small marketing reach i.e. your local state, then you may like to create localised LinkedIn tags. Here’s an example of what they may look like:
- Brisbane 1-50
- Sydney 1501-1550
- New York 551-600
Pretty simple right? The key point to remember here is to keep each of your tags to a maximum of 50-connections. This will ensure you can maximise the use of the group message functionality.
Another great way to utilise the tagging feature in LinkedIn is by segmenting your connections by Industry type. Here’s an example of what your industry tags may look like:
- Accountants 1-50
- Lawyer 151-200
- Financial Planner 351-400
Once again make sure you keep each of your tags to a maximum of 50-connections.
3. Niche Market
The ultimate use of your LinkedIn tags. LinkedIn currently only allows you to have up to 200 tags – so it’s critical that you use them effectively. A great way to do this is by being laser focused, and clearly identifying potential niche markets within your LinkedIn network. Here’s an example of what your Niche Market tags may look like:
- Accountants, Company Size 51-100, Brisbane 1-50
- 1st Level Connections, Coaches, Sydney 1-50
- 2nd Level Connections, Financial Planners, New York 51-100
I cannot stress enough the importance of investing the time to create quality niche LinkedIn tags.
So there you have it. There are three simple tips for some powerful ways to effectively use LinkedIn Tags in your marketing.
